Hydrology and Hydraulics

Hydrology and Hydraulics (H&H) is a branch of Civil Engineering focused on the management of rainfall. Specifically, how it falls, how much falls and where it flows off to. As a key area in the Houston market, IDS boasts a strong reputation of expertise in H&H. We work in support of our various market sectors, such as Land Development and Pubic Works, but also serve direct clients like Harris County. For many projects, the H&H analysis and outcomes are the foundation for a successful project. We pride ourselves on providing solutions centering our client’s needs with a multi-step process that ensures both our internal team and external clientele understand the nuances of their tailored solutions. Services provided include:

Often the first step in the process of evaluating existing drainage conditions and implementing improvements or alternatives. This is achieved by utilizing various modeling software based upon project complexity, GIS data, topographic surveys, reviews of other reports and construction plans, and “old fashion” boots on the ground site reviews. We coordinate with the local regulatory entity on required criteria, background information, and submission requirements.

The modification of an existing floodplain resulting from new development or a drainage project, such as a bridge, channel project, or commercial/residential development. This change is documented by a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) process which includes: LOMR-Fs (for fill), CLOMRs or CLOMR-Fs (pre project; conditional). This type of work requires coordination with FEMA and can require use of the latest 2-dimensinoal modeling software.

We take the planned solutions from an engineering study/report and develop them into constructable, practical, efficient, and sustainable hydraulic structure designs. Solutions can range from ditches, swales, culverts, and storm sewer networks, to more complex solutions, like large channel systems, specialty headwalls, gravity or pumped detention basins, outfall structures, weirs, and siphons. Out of the box thinking and innovation will be applied to meet the clients’ need.
